The Portuguese Forward Scores Hat-Trick as The Blues Deliver Manager Rosenior with Happy Return to Hull City
Amid freezing rain, flurries, and a swirling wind off the waters of the Humber, alongside a resolute home side pushing hard for a top-flight place, this presented all the makings of a difficult evening’s task for the visitors.
"We could have added to our tally but Hull are a good team and it was a difficult tie; I’m very pleased with the display," he said. "Hull City means a lot to me so it was nice to get a positive reception from both sets of fans. The application of the players was superb."
Liam Chelsea manager has this city close to his heart, given part of his relatives hail from Hull and his successful period in management of the Tigers. His positive association was extended with a magnificent performance from his team, who ultimately strolled into the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Clinical Finishing Secures Comprehensive Win
Three days after letting slip a two-goal lead in the Premier League, there was a hint of fragility about Chelsea going into this potentially tricky tie. The packed home support evidently sensed it too, but the London side navigated the challenge perfectly.
Rosenior made alterations, enacting multiple of them to his starting lineup. The match might and perhaps ought to have been decided earlier than it actually was, with both the Brazilian winger and Liam Delap at fault for spurning excellent chances to put Chelsea ahead in the opening period.
However, luckily for the visitors, Pedro Neto was in a much more clinical mood. He broke the scoring with a marvellous long-range effort, which acted as the catalyst for Chelsea to take control of proceedings. By full time, they had four, with the forward netting a trio of them for a superb hat-trick.
Delap's Redemption and Influence
The home side showed plenty of fight all game, but the clearer chances consistently came Chelsea’s way. The winger should have opened the scoring when he went past goalkeeper Dillon Phillips before inexplicably shooting over. Delap then had a comparable nightmare incident in front of goal against his former club.
He deflected a Phillips's clearance which bounced off the bar, and Delap began to celebrate thinking the ball had crossed the line. It had not, and by the time he understood, Hull's defenders had responded to clear the threat.
The player had his head in his hands after that moment, but he was immensely instrumental from there on out, providing three assists. The opening was for the opening goal as his through ball set up Neto to finish from range. Six minutes after the restart, it was 2-0 as Neto's corner went straight in under Phillips's legs.
Tie Sealed and Focus Shifts
Soon after Neto’s second goal, the match was put beyond doubt as a magnificent dribble from Delap teed up Estêvão to tap into an unguarded goal. Neto then completed his treble as the provider once again delivered the decisive pass for the striker to calmly slot past a stranded goalkeeper.
At that point, the effort Hull had put in in the opening half-hour had been erased. Their focus must now return to securing a promotion to the top division under their manager, who rested a number of key individuals with that goal in mind.
"In my opinion we earned at least one goal but if we perform like this we will be in a strong situation in the Championship," the Hull manager commented. "Never surrender, maybe in the next matches this can be a good lesson of how we must play."
Hull showed plenty of endeavour to the end, and they almost got a late goal when Lewis Koumas hit a the upright in stoppage time. But this was Chelsea’s night, and another encouraging stride for their new manager at a stadium he is familiar with very well.
Cup Omens Look Promising
The result made for an ultimately straightforward night's performance, and the cup competition signs are good from here for Chelsea. They have faced Hull on three previous occasions in this tournament in the last decade and on each occasion, they have progressed to reach the final. Much still work in that regard, but this was another significant positive for Rosenior.
