The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
