The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Implementation of AI Tools for Upcoming Divinity

The studio behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its upcoming project, creating significant hype within the industry. However, subsequent statements from the studio's co-founder have added nuance to the discussion, touching on the studio's stance toward generative artificial intelligence.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new clarification, the studio's founder outlined that the developer is using AI technology for particular ancillary purposes. These involve fleshing out presentation materials, producing initial concept art, and drafting placeholder dialogue.

Notably, Vincke emphasized that the shipping assets in the game will be created solely by human creatives. "Larian is writing all the content ourselves," he said.

We are constantly growing our pool of storytellers and are busily assembling dedicated writer rooms.

Given that concept art is being explicitly referenced — we currently have 23 artistic staff and have job openings for more artists.

Each initiative we do is supplementary and focused on letting our team spend greater focus on the creative process.

Every AI system applied correctly is additive to a creative team routine, not a replacement for their talent.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The news of AI usage originally generated unease among some the fanbase. In reply, Vincke issued additional clarification on public forums.

"At Larian, we employ these tools to research ideas, similar to we use the internet and reference books," he explained. "During the initial ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then replace with hand-crafted concept art."

He added, "Our studio recruits artists for their inherent skill, not for their capacity to replicate what a algorithm proposes."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had earlier detailed the team's practical method to AI and ML, defining its use into primary functions:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: Areas like motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using systems to rapidly prototype basic mock-ups of scenarios to test concepts before complete production.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how machine learning could in the future facilitate emergent gameplay, particularly in managing unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.

He specifically noted that core creative areas — such as writing — are are in no way departments where the studio is cutting human involvement. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these exact positions.

"Larian is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, nor considering reducing teams to replace them with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
