A confidential source has told an official investigation that the UK abandoned confidential technology allowing the Taliban to track down Afghans that had served with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, testified that people concerned by the data leak were advised to move homes and switch their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are looking into the Conservative government's handling of a massive breach of private information affecting nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to come to the UK to avoid the regime.

How the Leak Happened

A spreadsheet with their personal data, such as names, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was mistakenly released by an official employed at special operations center in last year.

The incident became known only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had applied to move to the UK surfaced on Facebook.

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Early investigations submitted to the inquiry suggested that at least 49 kin and colleagues of people concerned by the leak had been murdered.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with advised Afghan families they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they moved when possible and changed their mobile numbers. Those were the two main details that, if authorities had access to such data, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

Person A disputed that internal investigation performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to determine that the obtaining of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are not standing up to the authorities; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

Person A described terrible violence suffered by affected individuals, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“Instances include young kids who have had limbs fractured to force households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
