NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately after his victory in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain within me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

However his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting very different than his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
