The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
