As stated by a former senior officer from the Metropolitan police, police departments are increasingly pressured to publicly share the racial identities of individuals under investigation in response to a rise in far-right speculation on social media platforms.

Case Study: Knife Attack on Train in a UK County

Early Sunday, British Transport Police reported the arrest of two individuals after a multiple knife attacks aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. An individual, a 32-year-old black British national, and a second, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Subsequently, the 35-year-old was freed with no charges, and authorities stated he was not involved in the attack.

Updated Protocols to Fight False Claims

This past summer, revised directives were issued to tackle the dissemination of false narratives on digital platforms, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in Southport previously.

However, campaigners have raised concerns that this move could lead to an excessive focus on the ethnicity of suspects and fuel further extremist narratives when details are withheld with the general population.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who worked in the Metropolitan Police, described the requirement for law enforcement to disclose the ethnicity of individuals in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he said.

He expressed understanding for his former colleagues in the police, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Political Reaction

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose constituency includes the area where the train halted, called it “sad” but essential for police to swiftly release the racial identities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, stating that online platforms are used to push agendas, making it critical for police to provide accurate information to address rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the police announcement, conservative figures had called for a quicker action. For instance, Chris Philp urged for prompt sharing of identity details, while the Reform UK leader stated on X that the public needed to know “without delay”.

Additionally, extremist profiles online sought to manipulate the incident. One account named “UK Nationalist”—boosting thousands of followers—shared an unsubstantiated claim that a individual with a blade had been yelling a religious phrase.

Ongoing Suspicion

Despite authorities confirmed that the arrested individuals were UK citizens, some figures continued to suggest that details was being withheld. Ben Habib stated it was “almost inconceivable” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, despite official statements to the opposite.

Origin of the Directives

The guidance were created by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in acknowledgment of “public concerns” and to ensure police processes were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

The initiative came shortly after a political party accused authorities of hiding the identities and immigration status of individuals accused in a separate case in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds celebrating Liverpool FC’s winning, Merseyside police disclosed that the suspect was a white UK national to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

The NPCC stressed that decisions on releasing such information would be made by individual police forces, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Verifying a suspect’s immigration status would be handled by the UK interior ministry, not police.
