Israelis mark two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
People have assembled throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed formal memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The representative stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the deal.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the differences between the two sides.
Essential Points in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for assistance provision
- Post-war management of the territory
Citizen Reaction
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location feels like home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will be secure."
"Once we see all home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israelis desire the war to finish in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional dead people had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers said.
