Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 elections are over.
"Yes, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom remarked when asked about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
Newsom's tenure as governor wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any choice is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
The California governor has emerged as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, using his digital presence and pushing a initiative that would boost the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to cut federal funds from the state and suggested revoking the authority to grant CDLs.
"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," Duffy said, following a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.
Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to obtain a commercial driver's license under federal law.
Duffy had before indicated he was holding back additional funds from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration retorted in a last month's comment responding to the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A recently conducted survey showed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of over 40% to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
