Disturbing Unearthing: Remains of Vanished Mother and Child Found in Freezing Units in Austria
The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezing appliances in an residence in western Austria.
The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for a number of months, were found on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the flat, located in the Innsbruck area.
Two men, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were arrested in the month of June. The older man, a work associate of the female victim, stated to authorities last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected intentional killing.
Informing the media recently, a official for the legal authorities said the two suspects were being detained on "high likelihood of homicide".
The identities of those involved have not been released by law enforcement, in following Austrian law.
The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who is based in Germany, on 25 July 2024.
Police stated the woman's colleague claimed at the time she had gone on an extended trip with her child to see her family in the nation of Turkey.
The mother's debit card was then found to have been used overseas repeatedly.
However when police examined the victim's residence, her cellphone was discovered.
An individual also stated hearing a commotion in the flat, and screams of "mother" on the occasion the two were presumed to have gone missing.
A wider criminal probe was launched, with authorities uncovering several texts sent from the woman's phone—such as a resignation letter to her employer and messages to the male colleague.
Law enforcement stated a significant cash transfer was also moved to the individual.
The head of the State Criminal Police Office told media representatives on Tuesday that a rented space had been secured before the victims' disappearance and a cooling unit had been positioned inside.
The two suspects took out the cooling unit from the storage space on the day the mother and daughter went missing, she revealed. And a seven days after, they purchased another freezer.
Investigators state they believe this points to the demise were intentionally orchestrated.
"The reason for their demise remains unclear due to the state of decomposition of the bodies," the official commented.
A legal representative—from the legal authorities—stated the specific order of occurrences is yet to be determined, but the bodies were carefully placed and went unnoticed during a prior examination.
Although the suspects were arrested in June, it was only on 12 November that the suspect confessed to an occurrence and to concealing the remains. He rejects any murderous intent, authorities stated.
In a related development, his 53-year-old sibling acknowledged a cover-up but disputed involvement in a homicide.
The two suspects are currently in pre-trial detention in jails in two Austrian cities, around 117 miles (189km) apart.
Through a combined announcement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister stated the "suspected killing of two... represents the sudden and brutal end of two individuals and reveals a cruel system".
"Women and girls are being murdered due to the sole reason that they are women and girls," they continued.
"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and issue affecting all of society that we must combat firmly."
