Disney's Real-Life Moana Trailer Appears Remarkably Similar to a Cartoon
The first trailer for the forthcoming real-life version of Moana has arrived. Would you believe that, like many of Disney's live-action remakes, it looks very much like an animated film and far less like a true live-action movie?
Breathtaking Visuals That Keep an Animated Feel
The trailer for the latest iteration of Moana is certainly spectacular. It features grand scenery, gorgeous soundtrack, and well-known personalities. Yet, it still looks similar to an cartoon. The over-the-top visuals depict characters soaring, water defying gravity, and Maui transforming into an insect and a winged creature. Each of these effects is achieved through computer-generated imagery and CGI. Much like earlier Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of animation is so high that it prompts the debate: what defines these films “real-life” besides the promotional label?
Narrative and Songs Fans Adore
Regardless, this latest Moana seems to be a retelling of the original story, including new renditions of the cherished musical numbers. As described in an official summary, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to bring back prosperity to her people.”
New Cast and Familiar Faces
Meanwhile, the trailer features a snippet of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The young actress is taking over the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the character in the original films.
One person who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be playing Maui. Naturally, that character already resembled Johnson, so casting him in the real-life remake seems reasonable.
Fan Favorite Character Shows Up
Perhaps the most important part of the preview comes in the final shot. Moana's beloved chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, squawking at the camera. What better way to introduce the film’s true mascot?
Arrival in Theaters
The live-action take of Moana arrives in cinemas on July 10, 2026.
