Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to independently develop this new product within a personal series showcasing causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the continuing tension between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, which match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
