Barry Manilow Scheduled for Surgery for a Lung Cancer Diagnosis.
Barry Manilow announced that he has been diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and will undergo an operation.
Early-Stage Diagnosis
The 82-year-old singer, famous for his series of upbeat chart-toppers from "Mandy" has made him one of pop music’s most beloved showmen, will have an operation to take out a section of lung tissue in an effort to fight off the condition, which is at an early phase.
“As many of you know, I recently went through six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a recurrence of another five weeks.
“Although I was recovered from the illness and performing again in Las Vegas, my attentive medical team requested an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.
“The MRI identified a malignant lesion on my left side that must be removed. It’s sheer fortune (and a skilled doctor) that it was caught so early.”
Concert Delays
He has rescheduled a series of planned concerts, but suggested he would be on stage again by the February holiday for his long-running residency at his Vegas home.
He added: “The medical team do not believe it has spread and I’m having examinations to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. Chemo is not needed. No radiation. Just home remedies and I Love Lucy reruns.
“I’m looking forward to until I return to my second home at the Westgate Las Vegas for our February love-themed shows.”
Decades in the Spotlight
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a residency in Nevada. The singer has been in the limelight and revealed he is gay in 2017, after marrying his manager and long-term partner confidentially in 2014.
The couple were in a private relationship for in excess of 35 years. In 2023, Manilow reflected on how vital his partner had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.
“When my fame skyrocketed, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, going back to an lonesome hotel suite, you can land in a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re alone night after night,” he said.
“But I encountered my future husband right around when it was taking off. And I no longer had to go back to those isolated suites. I had a person to cry with or to enjoy success with.
“I hope that young people don’t have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
