Ten years back, Anthony Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he is focused to assist Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from the pitch to the sidelines commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his purpose.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey stands out. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he established a name with creative training and great man-management. His club career led him to top European clubs, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak according to him.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, the coaching duo test boundaries. Their methods feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights “Team England” and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says and the head coach as extremely driven. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and we dedicate most of our time to. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes and to lead and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear during that time. It's about moving it from idea to information to understanding to action.

“To develop a process for effective use in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured their place at the finals with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the robustness, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data now. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger for development is all-consuming. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations he could find to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He earned his license as the best in his year, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
