An Account of Unexpected Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book a place to stay when I arrived, but once I got there, a major event was in town and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the airport – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, closes around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking towards a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the evening somewhere that stayed open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more people with such compassion.
Apparently, I appeared lost as a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city center and wondered if everything was alright. I shared my situation and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on the floor at her university residence at the local university – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one sandwiches she had from her part-time job. This gave me the bathroom and a protected spot and safe to sleep.
With hindsight, I can appreciate the significant risk she accepted as a young woman inviting a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
