Throughout many decades, Virginia has seen 74 state executives, each one of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the first female governor in Virginia's history.

Background and Education

Born in a New Jersey town on a summer day in 1979, she relocated to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at age 13. Her dad was an military serviceman who later worked in police work; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She attended the Virginia's flagship university, obtaining a degree in literary arts. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a substitute teacher before embarking on a life of service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” she shared with followers at a gathering in the city of Norfolk last Saturday.

Public Service Career

At the Postal Service, she investigated involving drugs, exploiters and financial criminals. She executed search and arrest warrants, frequently being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and concentrated on national security, working covertly and abroad.

Life Change

In that year, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Residing on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a globe and asked their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she replied, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we opted to transition from a federal career, to state involvement because she was right. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in her home state, she participated in a grassroots group, which addresses gun violence, and started a youth group. In 2017, she resolved to seek office, which advisers told her was a “long shot” because no Democrat had won the seventh district in decades.

“But I witnessed what Donald Trump was implementing with his actions and how he was creating conflict. And I noticed my member of Congress consistently work against the healthcare law. And I knew I had to step up. So for the record: I succeeded.”

Centrist Approach

In the capital, she quickly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a alliance of centrist and fiscally moderate Democrats. She prioritized specific policies: bringing broadband to rural areas, combating narcotics trade and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for partnering with opposing parties and was consistently rated as the most cooperative member of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt alienated centrists, warning her party against ideological slogans that could be used against them in tight races.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was called a part of the “mod squad” in opposition to the progressive “group” of AOC.

Run for Governor

In that autumn, she announced she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would rather run for governor in the next election.

Her platform highlighted themes of civic duty, support for education and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her intelligence experience gave her credibility on national security issues and she spoke of public service as a vocation instead of a job.

Successful Campaign

This enabled her to counter Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s criticisms on cultural issues, notably the claim that Spanberger is an extremist on individual freedoms and transgender healthcare.

Spanberger, who stated that local school districts should determine whether transgender students can join competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the candidate more misaligned with the center of the commonwealth's citizens.
